Our Story

I’m Joanna Miller, the creator behind Churna.

I’m Joanna Miller, the creator behind Churna. On my personal Ayurvedic journey, I learned that while the foundations of beauty start from within, there are many therapies aimed at enhancing one’s external appearance. Hair and tooth powder were introduced to me by an Ayurvedic doctor, and immediately I was hooked. For years I struggled with products that irritated my skin, so it was immensely satisfying to use products that felt right for my body for the first time. The only problem was that they were not commercially available on the market, so I began the process of sourcing and blending herbs on my own.

After sharing these products with family and friends for years, the growing demand became clear, and now we are proudly able to share these products with you. We hope that you benefit from these first six products. Plans for a hair mask and additional products are in the works and will be offered soon, all following our mandate to offer 100% natural products that honour traditional Ayurvedic principles.

Our Ingredients

Amla Fruit Powder
(Emblica Officinalis)

This edible fruit is considered to be a miracle cure for hair care. Amla or the "Indian gooseberry" is proven to be an effective treatment for hair loss. It stimulates hair growth and improves the overall quality of hair. Amla purifies the blood and enhances your natural hair colour, while preventing premature greys.

Neem
(Azadirachta Indica)

The medicinal properties of Neem are found in its bark, fruit, and leaves - so we incorporate all of them into the formulations of our Shampoo and tooth powder. In Ayurveda, it is used to balance pitta and kapha dosha and treatment of Vata disorders. Its powerful anti-fungal anti-bacterial properties make it a great ingredient in the treatment of dandruff and psoriasis. Maintain a healthy scalp and grow a stronger mane naturally.

Bhringraj Leaf Powder
(Eclipta Prostrata)

Bhringraj, also referred to as the "false daisy", is a type of sunflower that grows in various regions throughout the world including Thailand, India, and Brazil. The plant is said to serve as an anti-aging remedy that assists in hair growth. Rich in Vitamin E, known to fight free radicals that can impede hair growth, studies have also shown products containing Bhringraj can actually increase the number of hair follicles. Its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties improve circulation to the scalp, reducing irritation, making it an effective treatment for dandruff and psoriasis.

Sweet Apple Seed
(Annona Squamosa)

Rich in Vitamin A & C, potassium and magnesium, Sweet Apple Seed Powder helps keep your scalp and hair strong by helping to regulate healthy sebum levels, to free the scalp of dead skin cells and bacteria, refreshing the hair follicles for optimal growth. Also high in copper, this builds up the body's melanin levels to help stop premature greys in their tracks.

Licorice Root Powder
(Glycyrrhiza Glabra)

Also known as "Yashtimadhu", Licorice Root Powder used in our Shampoo and tooth powder is quite an invaluable herbal ally to support you on your path to wellness and balance. Containing antiviral and antimicrobial properties help kill bacteria in the mouth that are known to cause tooth decay. It also promotes blood circulation to the scalp, nourishing hair follicles with vital nutrients such as potassium and biotin. This helps treat hair fall, while conditioning the hair to contribute to a naturally healthy shine.

Orange Peel
(Citrus Sinensis)

The Santra Sal Peel powder used in our Ayurvedic Shampoo is rich in Vitamic C and bio-flavonoids, which aids in proper circulation to the scalp to promote hair growth. It's also a great treatment for itchy scalp and the prevention of dandruff, resulting in shinier hair.

Kapur Kachri Powder
(Hedychium Spicatum)

The aromatic and herbaceous rhizomes of Kapoor Katcheri herb is a fortifying source of antioxidants. The Ayurvedic healing system uses this herb for treating poor blood circulation and inflammation by stimulating blood flow to the scalp. It is often used for hair growth, and leaves your tresses stronger and shinier.

Reetha
(Sapindus mukorossi)

Also referred to as "Soap nuts" or "Indian Soapberry", has been used for many washing applications, including the laundering of clothes. It's a natural foaming and cleansing agent due to the presence of saponins which when mixed with water produces a lather. Due to its Tridosha balancing property, Reetha helps to keep the scalp free of dandruff, which according to Ayurveda is one of the prime causes of hair fall. It provides a natural lustre and shine to hair damaged by air borne pollutants.

Shikakai
(Acacia Concinna)

Shikakai, a climbing shrub native to Asia, has been traditionally used as a hair cleanser in India for centuries. Rich with saponins, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, E and K, it produces a lathering effect when used in our Ayurvedic Shampoo that works to gently cleanse the scalp, improving and enhance your hair's natural texture. This makes it a great detangler to reduce hair breakage, and even reverse damage done from using commercial hair products with harsh chemicals. This ingredient is particularly great for people with very curly or frizzy hair looking to make the switch to all-natural products.

Aloe
(Aloe Barbadensis)

The gel-like substance from the thick leaves of the Aloe vera plant has been used for centuries for its many healing properties. It serves as a mild cleanser that maintains the integrity of your hair strands while stripping it of any excess sebum or oil residue from other hair products. The fatty acids in this ingredient contain anti-inflammatory properties, providing a cooling effect which soothes itchy scalp and reduces inflammation from dandruff.
