Bhringraj
Bhringraj is mentioned in Ayurveda as one of the main herbs that improves the quality of hair. With regular application, hair becomes long, silky and strong. Massaging Bhringraj oil into your head improves blood circulation to the scalp, which then increases the amount of hair follicles.
What does Ayurveda say about Bhringraj?
Bhring means black insect which has a dark black colour. Bhringraj was given its name because it maintains and restores the black colour of hair. Over time it has been observed that Bhringraj helps to maintain natural hair colour and reduces the appearance of gray hair, but it does not turn hair black. It was most likely referred to this way because at that time black was the dominant hair colour in India. Bhringraj is known as Keshya, which means it is good for hair, and Kesh rogahara, meaning it treats diseases of the scalp. It is mentioned that it treats Khalitya, hair fall, and Palitya, graying of hair. Its suggested use is in the form of Lepa, which means paste, or Tail which means oil.
What does modern science say about Bhringraj?
Many studies have been conducted to find out if Ayurveda’s claims about Bhringraj are true. A study in 2008 showed that treatment with Bhringraj resulted in more hair follicles and hair that grew twice as fast when compared to a control group.
Studies have compared Bhringraj with Minoxidil, which is the active ingredient in Rogaine. Bhringraj was found to be more effective than Minoxidil in treating Alopecia and genetic hair loss. Bhringraj improved the growth rate, length and density of hair when compared with Minoxidil and three other herbal remedies.
One study was done to determine if the efficacy of Bhringraj was due to its ability to extend the anagen phase of hair growth, which keeps hair follicles in place longer. It was reported that 75% of participants with mild to moderate hair loss reported a significant reduction in hair loss after seven weeks of use.
